RadonAware is a branded public education and advocacy program established by the BC Lung Association. The program is focused on providing research, information, education and advocacy on issues related to reducing the lung cancer risk caused by radon.
Radon is a radioactive gas that occurs when uranium in soil and rock breaks down. You can’t see it, smell it, or taste it.
In enclosed spaces, such as a home, it can accumulate to dangerous levels. After smoking, radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in Canada and is responsible for as many as 16% of lung cancer deaths. Note: Smokers that are also exposed to high levels of radon have a 1 in 3 lifetime risk of developing lung cancer.
The only way to know if your home has a radon problem is to test.
